Fictional Book Report

Below is an example of a fictional book report. This includes everything described in the rubric (found in the book report packet) which was given to students in the beginning of the month. The rough draft is due on Thursday, February 23. The draft should be written by the students. Students will type the final draft at school.

The title of the book I read was Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osbourne. This book is in the Magic Tree House series. Dinosaurs Before Dark was published in 1992. This book would be in the adventure, mystery, or children's literature genres. The story mostly took place back in time during the Cretaceous period about 65 million years ago. The main characters are Jack, Annie, and Henry the Pteranodon. Jack is eight and a half years old and is more careful then his sister. His sister Annie is seven years old and is adventurous and brave.

One day, Jack and Annie discover a treehouse full of books. Jack opens a book on dinosaurs and wishes that he could see a Pteranodon for real. Suddenly, the tree house takes them back to the time of the dinosaurs! When the siblings see a Tyrannosaurus Rex, they run back to the tree house, but Jack realizes that he left his backpack. Jack runs back to get it, returning to find the T-rex blocking his path to the tree house. Annie sends Henry the Pteranodon to save Jack, who climbs onto the dinosaur's back and is flown back to the tree house. Jack then finds a book about Pennsylvania and wishes to go there. They make it back home just in time for dinner.
A lesson that readers can learn from this book is to not judge others before you get to know them. At first Jack didn't like Henry, but Jack ended up changing his mind. My favorite part of Dinosaurs Before Dark was when Jack flew on Henry’s back. Jack was scared of the Pteranodon in the beginning, but he got over his fear and was able to fly on a dinosaur! I would recommend this book to students in third and fourth grade because it is not too easy or too hard and is adventurous and interesting.
